Description

Private Cemetery. Ask permission before visiting. Found approximately two hundred meters southwest from the Birriwa Homestead, the cemetery is currently enclosed by a wire mesh fence. While the precise number of individuals interred remains uncertain, it is speculated that up to ten people were laid to rest in this small private cemetery. These burials took place between 1865 and 1880. Graves include those of Thomas Leeson (1880) and Daniel Holt (1865), along with Senior Constable John Ward (1865). The inscription on the plaque for Senior Constable John Ward reads, "This memorial plaque has been erected by the family of Senior Constable JOHN WARD who gave his ultimate sacrifice when he died as the result of gunshot wounds sustained when arresting the bushranger SAM POO at Barney's reef on the 3rd February 1865 aged 33 years." The inscrption for Holt was recorded as saying "Thomas Daniel Holt Killed by a fall from a horse February 5th, 1865 Aged 6 years 5 months. Jesus took him to himself, and blessed him that he might be blest, his eyes no more will close in sleep, for Christ, his little lamb will keep."
