Description
The old church at Bovevagh is situated on a promontory above the Bovevagh River. The name is derived from "Both Maeve" meaning "The Church of Maeve". The earliest reference to a church being here was recorded in 1100 AD when a wooden church was burned. The medieval church we see today was in use over a long period. The east window is possibly 13th century and the west window could be as late as the 18th century. The site is generally associated with St Ringan but connections with Saints Patrick, Aidan and Adamnan have also been suggested.
